FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Humanism, and what is a "Humanist officiant"?

Humanism is a philosophy or system of beliefs that places a priority on the well-being and equality of all human beings, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation. It's beliefs are based on evidence and science. A Humanist Officiant has undergone rigorous training, credentialing and supervision by the Humanist Association of Canada to perform weddings for anyone desiring humanist or non-religious ceremonies, and must abide by a strict code of ethics. In Ontario, Humanist Officiants are licensed by the Province to solemnize marriages under the Marriage Act.

Can/Will you marry same-sex couples?

Absolutely. I will marry couples over the age of majority who both willingly wish to enter into marriage.

How do you handle a problematic guest?

In the unfortunate situation that you'll have one or two rowdy guests who are being disruptive, it's important for me to know how you would like me to handle it. Often, we know ahead of time who has the potential to become disruptive. We can make a plan in advance of how we can handle it, whether we have a friend or family member who can double as a bouncer, or if you would like me to pause the ceremony while we address the situation.

How long do your ceremonies usually last?

If you're looking to have a quick legal ceremony, normally these take about 15 minutes. I am amenable to creating a ceremony in accordance with your wishes—as long or as short as you'd like.

How many pre-wedding sessions will we have?

If you'd like a very personalized wedding ceremony, you may want to meet with me in-person or virtually several times before the wedding so that I can get to know you as a couple. I will meet with you as much as you'd like to ensure you are comfortable with me, and the ceremony we craft.

Will you help us obtain our marriage license?

I can let you know where and when to obtain a licence, but at least one of you must attend the municipal office in-person to obtain your licence.

Can you marry us at any venue of our choosing?

I will marry you anywhere in Ontario. However, for certain venues, such as public parks, you may need a permit. I do get sea-sickness, so while I love the idea of getting married on a boat, I may not be the officiant for you! If you have chosen your venue, let's chat and ensure that you have everything you need for your ceremony, such as any needed sound equipment.

Do you do rehearsals?

If this you feel you want or need a rehearsal, I can accommodate if we know the date and time in advance. Rehearsals are not an automatic part of the package, and based on time and distance will be an extra cost we can discuss.

What do you wear when you officiate a wedding?

As I get to know you and your wedding day, I can suggest an outfit or two to fit the formality of your day ensuring I don't clash with your attire for photographs. Typical attire might be a black business suit or dress, but I can dress up or down to suit your preferred aesthetic.

Do you have a backup to step in if necessary?

In the unfortunate case that some unpredictable, unavoidable event prevents me from being able to perform the ceremony, I'll have your bases covered with a backup. The Humanist officiant pool is there for each other in case of emergency.

What is not included in the fees for officiating our wedding?

Taxes are not included in the package price, as well as mileage for far distances, rehearsals and the cost for any specific items needed for your ceremony, such as candles or other items for rituals,
